Espresso Beans : 101

Espresso Beans : 101

An Italian Barista explains what to consider when choosing beans for the perfect espresso.

Beans : 101

Ultimately, the quality of your espresso rests on the quality of your beans.  Consider the following:

  • Choose beans that are roasted on demand to ensure maximum freshness

  • Overly roasted beans will result in a burnt tasting espresso

  • Choose a blend that uses premium quality beans and blends that have beans from various regions of the world to ensue a rich complex taste

  • Robusta beans are responsible for the intensity and strength of the coffee while arabica beans are responsible for the aroma and body of the body

This bean hopper shows the sticky residue left behind by oily beans. If the beans you use in your espresso machine are too oily, you run the risk of clogging your grinder and potentially needing service on your machine.  If this looks familiar, or your grinder is spinning without grinding, you most definitely need to consider changing your beans.
